whimsical movies:

the last unicorn

the last unicorn is an animated film based on the peter s. beagle novel of the same name. what can i say about this movie? the art style is simply gorgeous! the story is so sad and yet so beautiful. nothing i say will truly justify how amazing and whimsical this film is.
the story is about a unicorn that learns she may be the last of her kind, with the help of a magician and a woman, she goes on a quest to find the others. there's a red bull on her heels too!

the secret of nimh

kids movies were pretty dark back in my day, huh? well, this movie truly captures how well story telling can be if given the proper care. please watch it if you haven't! the movie is about mrs brisby; a widowed mouse that lives with her children on a farm. however her son falls ill and she seeks out aid from intelligent rats, with whom she has a deeper link... wooOoOoO

an american tail

what isn't to love about this lil movie? a russian mouse family moves to america because "there are no cats in america" but they then find out that there is, in fact, cats in america. the main mouse gets separated from his family and dot dot dot... it's a steven spielberg movie for crying out loud! go watch it! right now! also pretty sure i am a furry due to the italian mouse.

anastasia

anastasia was the only "princess" movie i was interested in growing up, i wasn't a huge fan of disney's princess line up. but anastasia captured my little heart! it follows a very fictional telling of the real anastasia and the romanov family downfall thanks to ra ra rasputin. listen, rasputin in this movie was insanely scary for a kids movie. there's a scene where anya is sleep walking and in her dream ra ra rasputin turns into a demon-like thing and woooOOOo that scared me as a kid haha.

balto

balto is another reason for me being lowkey a furry ngl. it is based on a true story of the alaskan husky balto who led a team of sled dogs to get medicine after the diphtheria pandemic hit alaska in 1925. the movie balto is half-wolf but there was no envidence that the real balto had any wolf dna in his blood (aside from husky's being a close relative). the real balto is currently mounted in cleveland museum of natural history and he has a lovely statue in central park, new york. balto is one of the main reasons i love dogs. what a good boy he was!

help! i'm a fish

this movie lowkey kinda weird... bunch of kids hang out with a crazy old scientist, little girl drinks poison and turns into a fish... brother and cousin drink the poison to save the girl and that's pretty much the whole plot. it's finding nemo if nemo and his dad were humans... listen it's weird but i enjoy it and little aaron paul stars in it!!!

cats don't dance

but like they dance a lot in this movie lmao! okay so cats don't dance is a movie about a cat named danny (orange) who wants to make it big in hollywood! buuuut animals are mistreated in hollywood and it's just not the american dream yk? danny is naive, happy and all these other animals are like umm chill anyway so... there's this little girl called darla dimple who's just a little bitch and hates animals (weirdo) so danny and the gang fight her with the power of dance, song and friendship! and danny has a love interest called sawyer who's... sigh...hot...furry moment (x3).

once upon a forest

this movie fucked me up... it's about this teacher that's a badger and then evil humans and their poisonous gas spill kills almost everyone and this little girl badger gets super sick so these three other animal children have to go on an adventure to get a magical herb madicine to save the day! and yeah, the gas spill scene traumatised me as a kid for some reason.

the snow queen

the snow queen (2002) is a tv movie that i am still obsessed with to this day. it follows two love interests kai and gerda; kai gets kidnapped by the snow queen and gerda must go save him. as her adventure starts, she goes through every season (spring, summer, autumn, winter); each having their own "ruler" who are all sisters! first is the spring witch, then the summer princess, then the autumn robber and finally the snow queen.
it's a great retelling of the hans christian andersen story!

stardust

stardust is based on neil gaiman's novel of the same name, it follows tristan who promises the girl he likes to get a star that has fallen. but it turns out that the star is not a star in the typical way... oh and witches... it's a great movie because duh neil gaiman!!! watch it, it's very british hehe.

aquamarine

the best mermaid movie everrrrrrrr!!!!! i need a sequel :(
okay so two friends befriend a mermaid names aquamarine and in order to stay on land she has to get a boy to say she loves her. and it's a cheesy romcom and i love it so much! also weezer - island in the sun.

the secret of moonacre

this was the first movie i saw on my own, i was like 11-12.
the story follows maria who moves into her uncle's "cursed" mansion but inherits a book that holds the key to saving the mansion. it's so fun and magical!! also the moon princess's name is "loveday" and i swear if i have a daughter, i'm naming her loveday.

moonrise kingdom

speaking of moons (jk). moonrise kingdom is my favourite wes anderson movie, it's so silly and so pretty!! the innocent way these two 12 year olds fall in love and want to run away together just brightens my day whenever i watch the movie.
"your girlfriend stabbed me in the back with lefty scissors"
"she's my wife now"

narnia

the chronicals of narnia aka the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. originally a novel by c.s. lewis follows the story of four siblings that find a wardrobe that leads them to narnia. if you haven't seen the movie... where have you been? go watch it! the sequels are...meh... the books are better. i heard they're remaking it into a netflix series though...

spirited away

oh man this movie!!!! my favourite studio ghibli movie 100%. it's eerie and it's fun and just ugh!!! i love you haku
